Oratory of San Rocco

Oratory of San Rocco

San Rocco: oratory, monastery, town, local fair

The Oratory of San Rocco was built, probably as a votive offering, after the plague that struck Spezzano in 1501.

Over the centuries, the people of Spezzano worshipped San Rocco at the building dedicated to him. It became not just a place of prayer, but also a meeting hall to discuss local issues.

In 1605, the house attached to the Oratory was sold to the Servite Friars order, leading to creation of a convent that, albeit for an extremely short time, was the only monastic community in the Fiorano area.

No trace remains of the small convent, as the building was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, and once again in the twentieth century, on the previous model, not far from the ancient construction.

The most important township of the territory of Spezzano, from the name of the oratory, took the name of township of San Rocco.

Several valuable works of art are kept there: the altar in scagliola and its tabernacle with a painted door showing “Christ resurrected” by Louis De la Forest, and the altarpiece by a Bolognese painter of the first half of the XVIII century, showing the 'Virgin with Child in glory, San Rocco and Sant’Antonio Abate'.

On 16 August each year, the San Rocco fair is held, a traditional agricultural fair in Spezzano that dates back hundreds of years.
